Can Speed Cameras Make A Difference?

Research from around the world demonstrates that speed cameras make roads safer. They reduce traffic crashes, casualties, and fatalities.

A review of speed camera evaluations by Cochrane Library including 35 studies from around the world found that average speeds were always reduced when speed cameras were installed. Most countries reporting a 10-35% reduction.

The number of crashes and related injuries decreased in all 35 of the above studies as well.

The Cochrane review suggested that “outcomes across all studies show that speed cameras are a worthwhile intervention for reducing the number of road traffic injuries and deaths.”

A study published in the British Medical Journal found reductions up to 69% for collisions, up to 65% for injuries, and up to 71% for deaths in the immediate vicinity of speed cameras.

Research conducted by the Center for Transportation Safety of the Texas Transportation Institute found that speeding increases crash risk and severity while speed cameras reduce speeding and crash severity.

A study conducted by the RAC Foundation found that the use of speed cameras leads to “appreciable reductions in speed…. and substantial reductions in collisions and casualties…”

A speed camera program in Scottsdale, AZ reduced speeders from 15% to 1-2%. Overall, there was a 95% decrease in the chance of drivers exceeding 75 mph.

A thorough analysis of the speed camera program in Charlotte, NC found ongoing speed reductions and recommended continued use of speed cameras for safer streets.

A pilot program in Portland, OR school zones found the reduced average and 85th percentile speeds with the use of cameras.
